Muqdisho, Somalia – The Somali Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AD Ports Group (UAE) . The agreement, aimed at fostering growth and modernization in Somalia’s maritime sector, represents a strategic collaboration between the UAE-based logistics giant and Somalia’s key governmental body responsible for oceanic resources and marine sustainability. The partnership is expected to strengthen Somalia’s maritime infrastructure, expand its blue economy, and promote sustainable fishing practices that align with international standards.

Under the terms of the MoU, AD Ports Group will leverage its expertise in port operations, logistics, and maritime technology to enhance Somalia’s maritime facilities and support the development of local infrastructure. The partnership focuses on multiple areas, including port development, digital integration of marine operations, and investment in sustainable fishing practices. Additionally, AD Ports will provide training programs designed to equip Somali nationals with specialised skills in port management, marine engineering, and logistics. This skills transfer is anticipated to build local capacity and lay the groundwork for long-term economic stability in Somalia’s coastal communities.

Strengthening Somalia’s Blue Economy

Somalia’s coastline, one of the longest in Africa, has significant untapped potential in the blue economy. The Somali Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy has identified sustainable fishing, port revitalization, and marine conservation as priority areas to stimulate economic growth. The collaboration with AD Ports Group is therefore seen as a crucial step toward realising these ambitions, especially as it introduces technology-driven solutions to streamline fishing operations, reduce overfishing risks, and preserve marine biodiversity.

The Somali Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Axmed Xasaan Aadan, highlighted the importance of this partnership in a statement: “This MoU marks a transformative phase for Somalia’s maritime sector. By working alongside AD Ports Group, we are not only securing investments but also paving the way for sustainable growth and development within our blue economy. This collaboration will enhance the livelihoods of our coastal communities and contribute to regional economic stability.”

A Regional Model for Sustainable Maritime Development

The AD Ports Group, renowned for its extensive experience in regional and international port management, views the collaboration as an opportunity to establish a model for sustainable and scalable maritime development in East Africa. “We are proud to partner with Somalia in developing a robust, sustainable maritime sector that prioritises economic growth while respecting environmental imperatives,” said AD Ports Group CEO, Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi . “This partnership underscores our commitment to building strong, resilient maritime infrastructure across the region.”

Long-Term Impact and Economic Growth

The MoU also aligns with Somalia’s broader objectives under its national development framework, focusing on job creation, technological advancement, and sustainable resource management. AD Ports Group’s participation is expected to attract further investments into Somalia, as well as interest from other stakeholders in the international maritime sector. As both parties move forward with implementing the terms of the MoU, they are hopeful that the collaboration will serve as a cornerstone for sustainable maritime practices and economic growth in Somalia.
